Once upon a time there lived a girl called Milly, she lived in Liddly Two Moons. Her father and mother were King and Queen, but they died in a fire after the war. So her Uncle had to look after her, until she was old enough to be Queen, well he was supposed to. And her Uncle never told her about her real life.
Milly had three special animals, each was a different type of horse for riding on different special occasions. She had a unicorn for riding on land. She was called Angel, and was white. Then she had a seahorse that she rode in the sea, that could turn big and small. He was called Sin. And a Pegasus that was the unicorns cousin. Her Pegasus was called Penny, which she used for flying.
One morning Milly woke up and went to see her animals and saw her Uncle, Mr. Oneshoe, fighting her unicorn. Milly said, “Stop Uncle you’re making her angry!” But he didn’t stop. Then the unicorn poked him in the eye, then Mr. Oneshoe pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed the unicorn. Milly said “Nnnnnoooooo!”, but he had all ready done it. Milly ran to her room and started to cry. Then the blood from the unicorn went in to Mr. Oneshoes body, the blood made his foot hurt so he took his shoe off, and ran away. That’s how he got his name, Mr. Oneshoe. Before that, he was called Mr. Twoshoes.
The next morning she still felt sad about her unicorn, so she went on a nice walk. A minute later she saw a wriggle in the tall grass, she peeked in and saw a baby zebra. His Mummy had been shot by teenagers, so she took him home to replace her unicorn. At home, Milly introduced her Seahorse Sin and her Pegasus Penny. Milly said, “Sin, Penny, I would like to introduce you to my new pet Zebra Zou.” Zou walked slowly to the others, Milly said “I hope you make good friends”, then she skipped to the house.
The next morning she tried to ride Zou but it was so hard because he was just a baby. She tried distracting Zou, but he kicked her. Then she tried jumping, but poor Zou fell on the ground because he was too small, and Milly was too big. Milly was getting cross, she said, “how can I have a pet if I can’t ride it?” Then she sulked.
One year later, Milly was 7, and her animals were very tame, except for Zou. She tried to make him tame, but he was still shy. She went on a walk with Zou, and he felt a bit tamer. When they got home she gave Zou some carrots, so she could distract him, and then she jumped on his back. Before Zou knew it, she was on top of his back and suddenly he noticed it wasn’t that bad having Milly on his back. So she rode on him till sunset.
The next day, it all went wrong. It hadn’t been wrong since her unicorn died. Her dreadful Uncle and his terrible animals had returned to take over the Kingdom, and kill her so she could never be Queen, not that she knew she could be. Mr. Oneshoe had a dragon called Spiky for flying and burning villages, and a crocodile called Snap, that he used in water and to eat people, and he had a dinosaur called Rocky, that he used for smooshing people with his huge feet. She ran for her life, then she found Zou and Penny, but Sin had gone.
They rode to the woods, far away, until they came to the sea. There was Sin, his head was peeking through the waves. That was lucky. They turned Sin small, then put him in a jar and then they ran as fast as they could until they found a gloomy, dark cave.
It was quiet in the cave and there was a leak in the roof. They put Sins jar under, so Sin could have some more water in his jar, so he could breathe because it had fallen out when they were running very fast.
The next day when she woke up her animals were playing outside Milly said, “Come back in or Mr. Oneshoe will see you”. So Sin came in, then Penny and last of all Zou. They all looked very sleepy. Milly said, “Did you stay up all night again? I’ve told you that you need more sleep than I do. So you need a cat nap.” Milly could see smoke in the distance, of the burning houses, and it made her sad.
Milly felt hungry, her animal were hungry too, so she said to her animals, “Why don’t we go to the forest to find some food.” So Milly got on Zous back, and they galloped into the distant forest. In the forest, Milly found some forest animals. They seemed shy, but very friendly. As she could talk to them, she said, “have you seen any food?” But the animals said “No, there’s a man who’s taken all the food.” Milly said, “That must be my mean Uncle.” And she said, “Which way did he go?” A baby bear came to the front of the crowd of animals and said, “He went to the old castle, your highness.” And Milly said, “What?!” The mother of the baby bear whispered to her child, “Don’t tell her that yet.” So Mother bear said to Milly, “Forget about that.” Milly said, “Where is this castle you speak of?” The animals said, “We will bring you.” So off they went to the castle.
Milly came to the castle but the door was locked. The baby bear said, “Why don’t you try your key necklace, urm...” Mother bear said, “My son is trying to say, your key on your necklace should open all the doors in the whole wide world. So why don’t you try it.” So Milly took off her necklace, and slotted it through the keyhole. She turned it, and she pulled it, until it swung open. She told all the animals to stay outside, whilst she went in. She could hear her Uncle coming down the stairs, so she hid behind a fancy plant. Whilst her Uncle opened the door, and said, “Who’s there?” The animals went behind the house, and Milly ran upstairs. She saw a door that said Milly on it, so she tried to open it, but it was locked like the front door. She remembered her key, tried it and the door flung open. She had just noticed, this door hadn’t been opened for a very long time. . Inside there were all her old toys she had been missing, and a magic teddy. And there was her old baby cot. She started to remember these were all her old things.
She looks out the window, and she saw her captured animals being taken to the dungeon. “Noooo!” she said, then she ran downstairs with her magic key leading her to the dungeon. She waited for her Uncle to come out, then she sneakily tiptoed in. Sin the seahorse was running out of water, because Mr One Shoe was tipping the water out and laughing. Zou the zebras magic stripes were fading. And Penny the Pegasus was losing her feather from her wings. They weren’t meant to be locked up. Milly looks down at her neck, but the key’s not there. She said, “Where’s my magic key?” She turns around and saw her Uncle cackling and saying, “Do you mean this key?” And he swallows it in one gulp. Then he grabbed her by the shoulder, and dragged her back upstairs to her old room, and locked the door. The magic key only ever opens doors, never locks them. Uncles key was different, it was a bad key, that only ever locked doors, never opened them. Milly started to cry when she just remembered about her magic teddy. She asked her magic teddy, “Please can you get me some help, I don’t want to be locked up forever, and my animals are in danger.” So, magic teddy squeezed out the window. Unexpectedly, he turned into a real big bear. He hopped off the roof and whispered to the forest animals about Milly being stuck.
Milly heared a rumbling and the forest animals charge through every door. A kind deer unlocked the magically sealed door to Millys room, with his key shaped antler. Then she said, “Animals, hurry, we must save the others.” They rush to the dungeon to save her animals, but her Uncle was already there with his mean animals. When Milly came in, her animals got so excited that they fought back. During the confusion, the stupid crocodile accidentally swallowed Mr One Shoe. When that happened, the crocodile realised his mistake, started to cry and ran away to the forest. The dinosaur and the dragon, realising Mr One Shoe was no more, started to cry as well, and ran away.
The next day, they went back to the castle, to tidy up the mess. Whilst Milly was tidying up the broken glass, she saw a reflection of her Unicorn, that died long ago. Milly said, “No, it can’t be”, and she turned around, and there the Unicorn was. All healthy and alive. Milly said, “It must’ve been my Uncles left over blood, the magic in the blood must have fixed everything.” And she started jumping in the air, and shouted, “This is amazing!” It wasn’t the only thing that was mended. Before her very eyes, the castle and the burnt out village, were fixed, as if by magic.
Suddenly, a big poofy dress started to grow, and glass slippers grew on her feet, and a crown. Mother bear said, “This is what my son was trying to say, you’re the Queen now.” She looked in the mirror behind her, and said, “This is the best day of my life!”
